How much covered care should we model?
These values represent approximate allowed medical spending—not the amount you personally pay.
Low use
A relatively healthy year with limited medical services.
Moderate use
Multiple visits, testing or an outpatient procedure.
High use
A substantial illness, surgery or other expensive medical year.
How the plans compare
Annual cost includes premiums plus estimated medical cost sharing and the additional copay/drug amount entered.
Plan A
$0Annual premium before medical cost sharing.
Plan B
$0Annual premium before medical cost sharing.
For covered spending up to the deductible, the calculator assumes you pay the allowed cost. After the deductible, it applies the coinsurance percentage entered. Medical cost sharing is then limited to the out-of-pocket maximum entered.
Many plans cover office visits, prescriptions or other services with copays before the deductible. Family plans may also have individual and family deductibles or embedded limits.
The lower-cost plan can change with healthcare use.
Low-use year
Premium often has an outsized effect when relatively little care is used.
Moderate-use year
Deductible and coinsurance become increasingly important.
High-use year
The out-of-pocket maximum becomes increasingly important when substantial covered care is needed.
Numbers are only part of the comparison.
Provider networks, prescriptions, coverage rules and eligibility for Marketplace financial assistance can materially affect the decision.
